Other Family Members

As you come to terms to your child’s additional needs and gain an understanding of what they may need now and in the future, it is also important to consider how you may want to let other family members know. Some parents embrace this new discovery quite easily, and others require more time to cope. Similarly, other family members like grandparents, aunts and uncles, and nieces and nephews, may also receive this news differently. Consider each person’s background and their previous exposure to other people with additional needs. Set realistic expectations for yourself, and ensure that you have the proper support mechanism to see you through this process.
